STEPHEN J. SALZER, M.D.
Dr. Salzer is Managing Director of Greenwich Venture Partners LLC and President of Greenwich ENT – Head & Neck Surgery P.C. He divides his time between clinical practice, teaching, various corporate and non-profit directorships and advising government, private equity and venture capital groups regarding medical ventures. His involvement in multiple facets of medicine – including managed care, organized medicine, laboratory and clinical research, patient care, teaching, publishing, practice management, pharmaceuticals and private equity/venture capital – give him a unique ability to synthesize information from multiple sectors. This has proved useful not only in analysis of current needs, but also in spotting future trends, and in facilitating enterprises involving divergent stakeholders.
Dr. Salzer was born in New York. He attended The Johns Hopkins University where his research interests focused on neurobiology and where he graduated with both General and Departmental Honors. He attended Medical School at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where his main research involvement was in inner ear physiology. His general surgery internship, Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose & Throat) – Head & Neck Surgery residency, and Chief Residency were completed at Yale where his training included traditional, endoscopic and laser surgical techniques. Dr. Salzer continued his studies at the Laennec Hospital in Paris, one of the world’s leading centers for head and neck oncology, where he did additional training in the area of advanced laryngeal surgery. He is board certified in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.
Keenly interested in both the practice and business of medicine, he has significant experience in contracting with managed care organizations, electronic billing, and electronic health record technology. He is has been successful in using technology to increase the quality of patient care, increase revenues and reduce overhead.
As a director of The Connecticut State Medical Society Individual Practice Association, the vice president of its Board, and a member its Finance Committee, his responsibilities have included monitoring several hundred million dollars in annual medical expenditures, the administrative budget and the overall financial viability of the organization of 7,000 member physicians providing services to hundreds of thousands of HealthNet patients in Connecticut.
Dr. Salzer served as a director of HealthyCT, a Consumer Operated and Oriented Health Insurance Company (CO-OP) under the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Starting in 2014 HealthyCT offered consumers another choice of health insurance, both directly and through the state’s health insurance exchange. In addition to having served as the organizations first CFO, he also served as a Director, as Treasurer, and as chairman of the Board’s Finance Committee.
He has also served on the United States Department of State BioIndustry Initiative Business Advisory Board for the Eliava Institute in The Democratic Republic of Georgia, and on the International Advisory board of The Institute itself. The Institute’s focus is on the development and production of novel biological products against almost all major bacterial diseases. The board serves to identify both short and long-term market opportunities and provide guidance on implementation of disruptive technologies.
Dr. Salzer has published numerous articles and book chapters on topics including nasal and sinus surgery, head and neck oncology, phonosurgery (surgery for voice disorders), and hearing physiology. He has presented his research and lectured in both the United States and abroad. He is the recipient of numerous awards for academic achievement, research and surgical technique. An enthusiastic teacher and mentor, he is a voluntary instructor in three residency programs.
He has been a member of the Sloan Kettering Charity Marathon Team (Fred’s Team) and a volunteer surgeon and fundraiser for Healing The Children and was the founder and president of Children’s Health International Medical Expeditions (CHIME).
